History painting is one of the principal genres, or subject types, of western art.
 
History painting is a broad grouping that includes paintings that depict scenes in actual history and paintings of religious, mythological, allegorical and literary subjects. 
 
They usually tell a story with an aim to convey a moral message about life.  They are mostly large pieces of art work that contain a number of figures. 
 
History painting was the most influential from the mid 15thcentury to the 19thcentury, and was often regarded as the most important amongst the other genres of western art.
