Genre painting is one of the principal genres, or subject types, of western art.

Genre painting refers to paintings which depict scenes of everyday life. 
 
Such scenes could be indoors, such as inside a home, a place for eating or drinking, a theatre or studio; or could be outdoors, such as in the fields, on the streets, by the river.  These scenes mostly include human figures.
