Appreciating art is as simple as stating what we like about a painting.

And the reasons for liking a painting can be very simple.

“I like this painting because green is my favourite colour.”

“I like this painting because it reminds me of my honeymoon to Bali.”

“I like this painting because it makes me feel happy.”

These reasons for liking a painting are direct, honest and authentic. They show a clear appreciation of the painting – how we have looked at the painting and how we have connected with it.

When talking to others, we may be shy to admit these reasons because they feel elementary, and so we pad them up with other intelligible explanations.  But deep down, the heart is triggered by such straightforward responses and we should not be ashamed of them.

Let us stay true to our hearts and openly acknowledge our reasons for liking a painting, no matter how simple they are.
